You agree to the privacy policy below, and the Privacy Policy for Substack, the technology provider.

Last updated: 28 August 2025

This Privacy Notice supplements The Economist Group Privacy Policy (“TEG Privacy Policy”). It applies only to subscriptions to The Economist’s Substack publication (The Economist: Off the Charts). Substack also has its own Privacy Policy, which applies when Substack acts as data controller, separate to The Economist.

Where this Notice conflicts with the TEG Privacy Policy, this Notice prevails for Substack use.

1. Provisions of the TEG Privacy Policy that do not apply here

The following provisions of the TEG Privacy Policy do not apply to Substack use, as these areas are governed by Substack or are not relevant:

  • Account registration and password management on economist.com or apps;

  • Subscriptions purchased directly from The Economist (including auto-renewals, cancellations, refunds);

  • Use of cookies or trackers on economist.com, apps, or other Economist products;

  • Marketing and personalisation across Economist Group services;

  • Processing related to Economist events, merchandise, or external partners.

2. Data we receive from Substack

From Substack, we receive:

  • Your name (if provided) and email address when you subscribe;

  • Any comments you post on our Substack publication;

  • Engagement information provided by Substack (such as open and readership rates).

We do not receive or store your payment details. Those are handled directly by Substack and its payment providers.

3. How we use this data

We use subscriber information for:

  • Delivering the newsletter content you subscribed to;

  • Evaluating readership trends and audience engagement, including understanding overlaps with our active and lapsed subscribers;

  • Managing and moderating comments where necessary;

  • Service administration and responding to subscriber queries.

During this pilot phase, subscriber data is used only within the context of this Substack newsletter. We are not currently using this data for direct Economist marketing outside Substack or routinely importing it into our central CRM systems.

The Economist processes your personal data on the basis of our legitimate interests as a media organisation to engage with readers through different mediums.

If we decide to use your data for additional purposes in the future, we will update this Notice, inform you of the changes and where required by law, seek your consent or provide an opt-out to our new processing activities.

4. Your rights

Your data protection rights (access, correction, deletion, objection, etc.) are described in the TEG Privacy Policy. You may also need to exercise rights directly with Substack for aspects of data they control (such as your Substack account or platform-level cookies).

5. Contact

For questions about how The Economist uses your Substack data:
